As a mom, I have found that switching books once a month, right at the beginning of each month is the sweet spot for knowing when and how often to get books for kids. Utilizing common themes and topics for each month makes it a lot easier to know what books to get. From a teacher perspective, reading books that have a theme or topic in common also allows for a deeper and more immersive learning experience for kids. This approach also promotes confidence and love for learning.

For the month of January, the common theme for books is “Winter” since this is the season that we are experiencing where we currently live.

Here are my favorite winter books, with appropriate reading ages:

  • "Where's the Penguin?" by Ingela P Arrhenius (Baby to 2)

  • "When Winter Comes" by Ekaterina Trukhan (2 and up)

  • "First Snow" by Nancy Viau (2 and up)

  • "Ten Little Snowmen" by Amanda Sobotka (3 and up)

  • "Snowmen at Night" by Caralyn Buehner (3 and up)

  • "A Snow Day for Amos McGee" by Philip C. Stead  (3 and up)

  • "The Snowy Nap" by Jan Brett (4 and up)

  • "The Snow Thief" by Alice Hemming (4 and up)

  • "The House with the Little Red Door" by Grace Easton (4 and up)

  • "Ultimate Spotlight: Polar Animals" by Sandra Laboucarie (5 and up)

Reading age-appropriate books to your kids will help support them in their current language skills and at the same time will challenge them to further grow in their language development. Additionally, it will help build early literacy skills at an appropriate pace, promote attention and focus skills, and foster a love for reading. It will also help avoid common issues like child disengagement and frustration during reading time.

I hope these selections of books are useful when you choose to explore the various topics of Winter with your kids!
