Hi there, I’m Karen.

I’m an Early Childhood Educator (BS), a former teacher and a mom of two. As a fellow parent of young kids, I felt at a loss when I first started introducing children’s media in my own home. I wasn’t happy with the endless, developmentally inappropriate media options that were out there. I was also tired of looking in too many places for good books, appropriate screen time options and resources to support my kids’ development at home. I wanted to find a central source I could trust that met all my media needs. So, because I couldn’t find one, I decided to take matters into my own hands. A few years later, Better Kids Media was born.

Through my expertise in early childhood development and my experience raising young children, I have curated a selection of children’s media (books, tv shows, music, podcasts and toys) that will not only serve as one of the best parenting tools you will ever encounter but will also help you raise confident, kind, creative and resilient children in this media-dominated world we live in. Stay tuned for more to come!

I find better media options for your kids so you don’t have to.

    Better Books

You’ve heard about the importance of reading to your child, but with the overwhelming number of children’s books out there, choosing quality, age-appropriate books can often feel impossible. With my monthly theme-based book suggestions, you’ll find it breezy to choose books that not only teach your kids how the world works but that also help promote early literacy skills, imagination, social emotional skills and a love for reading.

    Better Screen Time

Screen time gets a bad rap because it can lead to negative behaviors when used inappropriately- it’s true! However, my selections of slow-paced, low-stimulating, gentle, shorter, educational shows, together with tips on appropriate use, will transform your kid’s screen time from a source of entertainment and distraction to a powerful learning tool. I can’t wait for you and your kids to experience the magic of theme-based, quality screen time!

    Better Music & Audio

Music, audio books and podcasts are some of the most beneficial media for early development. Music, paired with appropriate visuals, can be a powerful tool to promote early language development in babies and toddlers. Audio books and podcasts can further develop language, cognitive and literacy skills necessary for academic readiness. Learn how to tap into the power of these audio experiences as you utilize my top music and audio suggestions!

    Better Toys

You may not think toys could be considered a type of children’s media, but just like the better known audio-visual mediums, toys are a powerful way to communicate information, values, stories and ideas. When toys are selected with purpose and intention they become interactive work tools that create immersive play experiences and promote development. Bring intentionality to your toy collection as you take inspiration from my top toy picks!
